FINAL TOPIC FOCUS

Page history last edited by Caroline R 14 years, 5 months ago

The topic I am going to research for my final project will be disclosure on the internet.  I will explore how much is too much in regards to information you put on the internet.  I will look at the possibilities of businesses making their own virtual worlds so they can have their disclosure. Also, I will attempt to look at the possibility of crime levels being affected by the increase in information being given out on the internet.  I will try to answer the question, "Do we worry too much about the information we disclose on the internet?"

I need to avoid reasoning to the claim "the reason we have online predators is because people give out too much information on the internet.  Quite the opposite could be happening.  Computer Hackers have become very savvy.  For instance, the man who works on our computers at home was able to "hack" into our neighbor's computer with a few clicks of the mouse.  Had he been wanting to find out personal information, he would have been easily able to get into their personal files.

Some Sources:

(hopefully!) An interview with the Chief Marketing Officer of DirecTv.  Hopefully, I would be able to get an executive's point of view in regards to disclosure on the internet and would a huge company like DirecTv benefit from having their own virtual world to communicate.

This interview will give me insight to Linden Lab's expected ability for business in Second Life.

Caroline,

There's an excellent source from Linden Lab about how they hope to provide private grids for business, starting at $55,000 US Dollars. The article talks in some detail about a firm's ability to link real-world identity to avatars:

Second issue would be to discover why most victims get stalked or have their personal information stolen. Could it be partly savvy hackers and partly mistakes users make? I love the network passwords some bank customers use. According to a friend of mine who worked for Suntrust, a pet's name was common, as were street names or even, at times, the password "password."

That's not the same as disclosure, of course. There I think of what one places in an online profile. Yet both lapses in judgment might point to a common erroneous assumption by computer-users.

Caroline,

In your first paragraph try to change up the beginning of your sentences. The "I will" is a little redundant.

Make sure that you don't stray too much from your topic of disclosure with the computer hacker situation. Someone disclosing too much information on the internet is very different than someone getting personal information taken from a computer hacker without them knowing.

I would also try to include examples of businesses that have successfully used virtual worlds for business situations and explore how much information they had their employees share.
